Network patch panel and structured cabling

Your network cabling is the foundation of every computer, phone, camera and access point in your building. Unlike switches and laptops, cabling is installed once and expected to last for many years, so choosing the right type at the start saves cost and disruption later.

What is structured cabling?

Structured cabling is a standards-based way of organising a building’s network infrastructure. Cables run from each outlet back to patch panels in a rack, where they connect to switches. Backbone cables link floors and buildings. The result is a tidy, documented and flexible network that is easy to manage and expand.

Cat6: the reliable all-rounder

Cat6 copper cable is the standard choice for many offices. It supports Gigabit Ethernet over the full 100-metre channel and is suitable for desktops, IP phones, printers and most cameras.

  • Cost-effective and easy to install
  • Ideal for typical office desks and PoE devices
  • 10 Gigabit speeds are only supported over shorter distances

Cat6A: built for the next decade

Cat6A (augmented Category 6) supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over the full 100-metre channel and handles higher-power PoE devices better thanks to improved heat performance. It is a good choice for new buildings, high-density Wi-Fi access points, server rooms and any site that wants headroom for future upgrades.

  • 10 Gbps over 100 metres
  • Better for modern Wi-Fi access points and high-power PoE
  • Thicker and slightly more expensive than Cat6

Fibre optic: for backbones and long distances

Fibre carries data as light, so it is immune to electrical interference and can run much further than copper. Multi-mode fibre is commonly used for backbones inside a building or campus, while single-mode fibre covers long distances between buildings and to service providers. Fibre is the natural choice for links between floors, between racks in a data center, and wherever copper distance limits would be exceeded.

Which should you choose?

Most modern offices use a combination: Cat6 or Cat6A to the desk, and fibre for the backbone between racks, floors and buildings. If you are fitting out a new office or expect to stay in the building for many years, Cat6A to the desk is usually worth the modest extra cost.

Do not forget: quality termination, testing and labelling matter as much as the cable itself. Always ask for test results and as-built documentation when your installation is complete.
